Home Base: the place in which someone or something lives or operates.

As I am writing this paper entitled Home Base, I see two visuals. One is from my childhood when my brother, cousins, and I would be at our grandparent’s home playing kickball or our version of baseball. The team that is up always start at home base and the objective is to round the bases and make it back to home base before the other team tags you out so that you can score and help your team win. Those were always a favorite team sport for us on many summers growing up. The other visual is the center of an operational organization. There is always a corporate office, headquarters for an organization or central operations for a non-profit. This is where the main decisions are made to move the organization forward.

So, what does this mean in terms of Leadership? Early in my corporate, non-profit, and entrepreneurial careers, I focused on more of what I needed to do at my job to move forward, provide for the family, enjoy the status of promotion and financial rewards. As I progressed and got more experience, I discovered that my home base should have been my home. It is challenging to be truly an effective leader if our Home Base is in disarray. My honored responsibilities fall to family first with the wisdom and guidance of following Christ. The decisions that I make should surround my Home Base. I use a rule of thumb when making those major decisions. Does it glorify God, does it benefit and bless my wife, and will my children still be proud to call me their dad once the decision is made? These are the determining factors when it comes to being an effective leader when you start with Home Base.

My challenge to you is examine your Home Base and all that you are responsible for. What has become your rule of thumb for making major decisions that positively and effectively impact your Home Base?

I am hoping that you are winning with Christ, collaborating with your wife, and leaving a legacy for your children.

The scripture that keeps me grounded in my Home Base come from Psalm 128 which states,

1 “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.

2 When you eat the labor of your hands, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.

3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants

All around your table.

4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed Who fears the Lord.

5 The Lord bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

6 Yes, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel!”

Lead your Home Base by fearing the Lord, blessing your wife, making your children proud and leaving a legacy!
