PURPOSE IN PAIN

ree

[3] Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, [4] and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, [5] and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (ESV)

What's up, my brothers? As we continue in the book of Romans, let’s look at a profound truth from chapter 5: our suffering is never wasted. Last week, we reflected on the peace we have with God through Christ. Now, we’re leaning deeper into the way He works within us through our struggles.

The Apostle Paul speaks of suffering—not as something to be avoided, but as a means of transformation. In this fallen world, we will face hardships: the loss of a job, the pain of losing a loved one, or struggles within our families. Some suffering comes as a consequence of sin, some because we live in a broken world, and some because we stand for righteousness. Yet, no matter the source, God is using our trials for His glorious purpose.

When we face suffering, we do not walk alone. God is shaping us through each challenge, producing endurance in us. He teaches us to stand firm, to hold onto His promises, and to trust Him even when circumstances seem bleak. In these moments of trial, our faith deepens, and we draw closer to our Lord. We learn to rely on Him fully, seeking His face with desperation and devotion.

Endurance refines our character. As we persist in faith, we humbly recognize our complete dependence on God. Though we make plans and prepare for the future, we soon realize that some things are beyond our control—unexpected illness, financial struggles, or life’s sudden twists. These are the moments that remind us to hold this world loosely, fixing our eyes instead on the eternal.

And what does all this refining lead to? Hope. A hope that does not disappoint. Our hope is not a mere wish, but a certainty rooted in Christ. Because we have been justified by faith, we are secure in the love of God. No trial can separate us from Him. No hardship can undo His promises. Our suffering is not wasteful, it is a tool in the hands of our loving Father, shaping us for His glory.

Remember my friend, the God who spoke the stars into existence is holding you in His hands. Right now, He is pouring His Spirit into your heart, strengthening you, shaping you, and working through every trial you face. You may not see it yet, but your struggles are not in vain—God is crafting something beautiful within you. You are never alone. So stand firm in His promises, find joy in His presence, and trust that His unfailing love will carry you through.

Scripture references for this week’s Blog

2 Corinthians 12:10

[10] For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (ESV)

James 1:2–4

[2] Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, [3] for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [4] And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV)
